SENIOR CITIZENS

SENIOR CITIZENS
It is a recent phenomenon that Senior Citizens have become a subject of discussion for a variety of reasons.
Is there a real need for coining such a word for we need to understand why this was done and what should be done apart from coining such a term.In Tamilnadu the term”Perisu” is very commonly used for older people and that too with veiled sarcasm.
A senior citizen is somebody above the age of 60 or on his or her retirement from job.A very powerful definition of a senior citizen has been given as a person who lacks basic motor skills, loses the ability to hear, walk ,think or cannot support themselves financially. To put it blunt would be saying that they become totally dependent on others. We fail to understand that it is very frustrating for that person as they go in for a lot of mental humiliation.
The other side of it is that in our country Old Age does not apply to Leaders. Most of our leaders are quite elderly and their ideas totally outdated. The younger generation do not get to play an important role in nation building. In India even though age implies experience, it may not necessarily hold good. But then why do we overlook the senior citizens in our own home. They are senior not only in age but also with their vast experiences their sound advise can definitely help us to grow into a more balanced human being. But the sad part is society starts to consider them as a burden.
The youth of today are busy with their careers and the middle aged are busy trying to achieve position of prestige.Technology has drastically cut into interpersonal communication between people and even normal conversations become rare.A few kind words have become a premium today.
Unsolicited advise from elders are unwelcome to todays’ generation although they may have a lot to offer based on their experiences. They can also tell us words of solace or a extend a healing touch to those around them.Unsolicited advise is not welcome but a Heart to Heart talk is.
Very important bridges can be built within each household between the seniors and the younger members of the family if the elders can resist the temptation of giving out advice.Nobody takes them in the right spirit these days.
In each household ,both the youngsters and the elders need to be given their own “space” which will go a long way in binding them together.Enjoying each others company and mutual respect grows from such an atmosphere.
Todays’ world and environment are so competitive that society does not care much for the needs of the senior citizens. The utter lack of concern displayed by the Government and the Society for the practical difficulties that they encounter is mindbogling.
Old age homes is not the answer to such a problem.Todays young generation should learn to appreciate the various challenges that the senior citizens face today.A kind word goes a long way in making them feel wanted .After all they just need to feel that they are not alone and there are people around them who love them.It is not our money that they crave for. Money cannot buy all the happiness in this world.Life is like a wheel and we have to remember that we will also be in the same boat after a few years.
The least that we could do is to be sensitive to their needs.

THE JOURNEY OF CRICKET

THE JOURNEY OF CRICKET

Those were the days in the mid seventies when cricket matches in Chennai wore a festive week.It usually came during the Pongal weekend. Government used to declare the first day as a State holiday.
People used to buy tickets early enough and stood in long queues to get into the stadium on an early Bogi morning.Spectators would come in around 8 in the morning to watch their stars practice in the nets. Breakfast would be packed for the full group on a pot luck basis. From the previous day onwards people would start sky gazing to look for possible clouds that play spoil sport.
Lunch was again a carnival and commentaries could be heard from the elders in the crowd of their yesteryear contemporaries .The statistics of the various players would be compared.
Facilities at the stadium were substandard, the toilets dingy,no water available and a long queue for the limited lunch parcels which would be sold in no time.
When the game gets over at 4.30 in the evening people would go to the hotels where the players were staying to have a close glimpse of their heroes.
Compare the scenario today.Tickets are priced twenty times more, not much advance booking for the tickets as daily tickets are more in vogue .Infrastructure at the stadium do not compare with the better ones in the world, fans provided in the stadium do not work ,toilets just about the same as smelly as it can be, food a shade better but at double the price. The spectators are ushered into the stadium after being frisked in detail.Neither plastic nor any matchboxes are allowed. In some cases even wearing black T Shirts are not allowed. Some of the stands have a net cordon to prevent the spectators from
throwing trash at the players. The match progresses but not without the spectators facing the fuss of jostling in long queues to enter the stadium.
This brings us to the big question whether advent of world class TV coverage have brought about a drastic reduction in the number of people coming to the stadium to watch the match.People now can have the comfort of airconditioners to watch the match, see replays, watch close ups, wine and dine while watching the match. We can even take a nap if the proceedings are dull and catch up with office work as well.
From the purist point of view, 5 day matches are a delight given the twist and turns over the said period so long as the pitches are true and sportive.
One day matches changed the face of cricket viewership.Spectators preferred to spend time and money to watch their stars over a day instead of spending 5 days on the same.Viewership drastically increased for this form of game while Test Matches became starved of viewers.Revenues for Test matches dwindled drastically .One day cricket matches became more profitable.Advent of Day/Night matches in One day cricket made viewing more compelling as people needed to just leave office early to watch the match.
The more recent phenomenon of 20/20 cricket seems to have even tricked one day cricket into submission.People finish their work when the matches start. The atmosphere is more carnival what with the dancers cheering the players and the spectators. The quality of cricket is more Bang Bang and entertaining and the result got over a period of 3 hours.
Technology over the years have changed many facets of the game. The role of umpires are being questioned with all these replays that we see.
New Superstars are born in the 20/20 matches and the crowd throng to see good entertainment.
Extraordinary performance in some of the recent matches make you watch them. They have that calm look amidst the tension which tells us ‘ Hang on ,watch me for a while’.
Any sport creates champions who in turn create moments of such precise beauty that no special expert is required to know immediately that this man is special and worth looking at.
20/20 cricket holds no appeal for the purist till
Dhoni and his team destroyed the Australian myth in the world 20/20 championship held recently.
Can any sport enthusiast resist such an opportunity!

HEALTHY LIVING

HEALTHY LIVING

In todays world eating right becomes very important. When we think whether we are eating the right kind of food in the right propotion the answer would definitely be a NO.
In this fast paced world that we are in today, with all the advances in technology we tend to eat a lot of fatty and junk food and end up with some health hazard or the other at a later stage.Even children get into health problems in their early years itself something which was unheard of a few years ago.
In the earlier days the women of the house used to be doing a lot of manual labour which included bending and sweeping and swapping the house, cleaning the clothes by hand and so forth. But with so many machines available to us today to help us in our daily task we need to go to the gym to exercise.Had we done these tasks at home we would not have to spend so much money on the Gym.This explains the mushrooming of Gyms at every nook and corner in our cities.
It is also important that we learn to prepare food in a healthy way in such a way that the nutrients are not lost.Choose methods of cooking that will retain colour, flavour and nutrients.Steaming vegetables instead of boiling them could be one option. In our hurry to finish cooking in time we tend to cook at very high temperature.High heat can leach out valuable nutrients.Cooking vegetable in too much water should also be avoided. When we throw away the excess water we are also throwing out the nutrients along with it.
We should take in a lot of vegetables in our daily diet.Eating a lot fresh salads would be a good choice.
In ourIndian type of cooking we tend to use a lot of oil.Using olive oil would be good alternative.Draining off the excess oil by keeping it in paper towels should also be done to absorb the excess grease. We should allow the soup to chill before reheating as the fat on the top can be removed.
We all love to eat cheese.Instead of depriving ourself of it we can eat low fat cheese and also skimmed milk.
Mocrowave oven cooking is a healthy way of cooking because the short cooking time ensures that there is no loss of nutrients and no fat is needed.
Substitute whole grain products for all purpose cooking. We now have a healthy way to have our dessert. We can have fruit desert.Nowadays we get flavoured yoghurt in different flavour which are quite delicious and taste like icecream.
For parents of young children they must be familiar with fussy eaters and poor eaters. We should not shove down the food down their throat but need to cultivate healthy eating habits. This is difficult in todays world with the advertisers tempting children through enticing food advertisements. As a parent we need to be a role model to our children. We need to reestablish our eating habits in order to teach children about healthy eating.
The latest trend is organic food. There is an increasing demand for organically grown food that is food grown without the use of chemical fertilizers .Organic food have countless health benefits.Safe food products, free from chemicals ensure a healthy life and children who grow up eating organic food are stronger.
The malaise of modern world is dieting.Young girls of today trying to look like their favourite actress and to get that perfect figure diet recklessly. They fail to understand that excessive dieting without the proper guidance of a dietician is only going to do them harm .True beauty lies in the mind.
Healthy eating and adequate physical activity are the key to a healthy life.
The proverb “HEALTH IS WEALTH” is best remembered here.

MIND OVER MATTER

MIND OVER MATTER

In the words of Henry Ford
”If you think you can ,you are right,if you think you can’t you are right”
We have still not realized the true potential of our mind.Dreams come true only if we really believe in them.Everything is within our reach only when we believe in them. This is called The Amazing Power Of Belief.
When we believe in something your brain sends positive signals to your body. Most people go through life without realizing their own self power. There is nothing impossible in this world. It is up to us to reach for it in our own way.Negetive thoughts undermine our capabilities .They stand in the way of achieving our dreams.
All of us do have bouts of depression and bad days .But it is up to us to overcome those negative thoughts and to look at life in a more positive manner.
Life is kaleidoscope of colours .We need to appreciate the beauty and in turn make of the different colours.

Never think As individuals we sometimes think lowly of ourselves.Self confidence is the key to success. If you think you can ,it is surely possible. We tend to blame ourselves for tall the wrongs that happen in our lives and in turn make ourselves feel unhappy. We need to understand that there are so many things which happen in our lives which are not in our hands and happen without any reason .We need to accept these realities gracefully and move on in life.
Blaming others when things go wrong is not going to be of any use to us.Nobody is perfect in this world.Everybody have their faults including ourselves. We do make mistakes. The important thing is that what is the lesson that we have learnt from this experience.
We cannot be the best in whatever we do.We should be realistic and grounded. We do need to put a lot of positive efforts to achieve our goals but cannot get disheartened when things go wrong .Weshould have the courage to pick up the pieces and start again.
A depressed person will tend to feel worthless and have a very low self esteem.Whenever we encounter a problem our first reaction is “Why Me”.I think we need to say”Why not me”.
Thinking negatively leads to unhappiness and being unhappy leads to depressive thoughts. This turns out to be a vicious cycle and we get trapped in it.
To promote emotional happiness we need to be happy.Whenever depressing thoughts come to our mind we should learn to divert our thoughts into tasks which give us happiness. We need to emphasise on our positive experiences and memories.
Keep your mind focused and set your goals and priorities.Take everything in your stride both success and heartbreak.
Be brave.Do not be afraid of changeLearn to let go of all your pent up frustrations.God has given us only one life to live.Enjoy and live life to the fullest.
It is never the event but the response to the event that mattere.Brush all thoughts of failure and think that you will succeed in whatever you do.
Wishing all your hopes and dreams come true.

TEMPLES IN INDIA

TEMPLES OF INDIA

We all believe that God exsists everywhere. We all long for his grace and blessing. We worship him to get his grace. In order to get the blessing of the omnipresent we build temples where we can focus on the power of the Lord in a consecrated idol for our own benefit in an easy way.
In our country we find many temples. In our temples we have idols installed and they have divinity infused into them and such they have a certain sanctity about them. The sculpture carves the idol and it becomes invested with divinity when we start performing Abhishekams,Archana and Deepaharati for the diety.
In our temples a huge temple bell is rung at the time of the Puja. This is done so that the evil spirit may go away from the temple premises and all the abuses and other bad sounds may be stifled from being heard.
The Puja we do in our house is for our own welfare while the Puja performed in temples is for the whole society.
In temples idol worship becomes very important. We do not consider it as a piece of stone but we consider the idol as our protector,We go to the temple and pray to him and pour out our woe of sufferings to him. When we pray we get peace of mind.
Temples are a great Heritage of our country.Since Temples is a place of Divinity we have to observe certain rules to preserve ,protect and nurture the sanctity of our temples which have been our greatest heritage.

MADURAI MEENAKSHI SUNDARESHWARAR TEMPLE

It is one of the greatest Shiva temples known for its lofty towers, halls and lavish architecture. It is the one of the site of the 64 Tiruvilayadugal of Shiva and is also one of the five Pancha Sabha of Nataraja where Shiva dances with his foot raised.
Legend has it that Meenakshi(Parvati) married Shiva here.Together Meenakshi andShiva have supposed to have ruled over Madurai.During the Chithirai Thiruvizha Meenakshi and Sundareshwarar are taken in a colourful procession. The divine marriage and the coronation are enacted.
The temple has stunning architecture and it was the fore runner in the elections for one of the seven wonders of the world for its architectural importance.
The Shiva shrine lies in the centre of the shrine. The 12 Gopurams of the temple have been elaborately sculpted and painted. It also has a universal sculptor of Lord Nataraja. Here Lord Shiva is seen dancing with his left foot raised.Normally it is with the right foot raised,The massive Nataraja sculptor is enclosed in a huge silver altar and called VelliAmbalam.Outside it is the huge idol carved out of a single stone called the Mukkkuriny Vinayagar. There is the Potramarai Kulam inside the temple premises where the pilgrims visit before entering the main shrine.
Another architectural delight which we find inside is the Aayiram Kaal Mandapam meaning thousand pillars. Each pillar is sculpted and is a monument of Dravidian Sculptor.Just outside the Mandapam are the Musical Pillars. Each pillar when stuck produces a different musical note.
The most important festival associated with the temple is the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam celebrated in April every year.
A visit to this temple is customary to every devout Hindu. It is believed that every wish of the devotee will be granted here and they will be blessed.
